“How to: Snack by Kayak” on Misadventures

Currently up on Misadventures is a little collaboration with Jen Kinney. It’s an old piece that has found a new home on the awesome on-line and in print platform for women in the outdoors. This story is from quite some time ago, when Jen and I took off for the Puget Sound in Washington to explore Lopez Island. We brought kayaks, but I think we were more interested in the local food scene than the fog covered scenery. Upon arriving, we realized the entire island it is a local food mecca. Farm stands, clam shacks, and local bakeries who use a specific grain that can grow on this weather struck island. We did the project part for ourselves and part of a few outdoor companies that we partnered with.

This essay is the part that was for ourselves including words by Jen Kinney and the kayak photography by myself. It is a fun article exploring not only the local food scene on Lopez Island, but also some new and old traditions. I’m not going to give anything away, but there is definitely a little segment on there about the pagan tradition for coming of age specific to the island. Also included are how-to’s for harvesting oysters and your own sea salt.

Check out her beautiful writing for this photo essay and writing collaboration, and while you’re at it, poke around the Misadventures site, there is so much good content on there.
